Piran Travel Guide

Located on the gulf named for the town, Piran owns a lucky piece of Slovenian coastline on the Istrian Peninsula. Lucky because of its location, Piran is blessed with beauty, location, climate, and history. This wonderful destination is a comingling of the Slavic world, the high peaks of the Alps, and the pleasant Mediterranean in a single place, with an official bilingual nature. Taking its name from the Greek Pyrranos, meaning red, Piran reflects the etymology of the reddish flysch stones of its sedimentary rock. Pre-Roman Illyrian tribes were the first residents, roaming about the region as hunters, fishermen, and farmers, and perhaps a few pirates. Part of the Roman Empire in 187 B.C., the town was fortified with a strategic circular wall to reinforce its defense. Today, walking the wall, it is more common to hear the music from electronic clubs, the buzz of busy restaurants, and the conversation of those out enjoying a stroll through the streets on one of the town’s signature musical evenings.

Where is Piran?

Piran is a town in southwestern Slovenia on the Gulf of Piran on the Adriatic with a population of about 4,000.
